Autumn Harvesting

Hello Everyone,

May I say a huge thank you to you our lovely customers.

When delivering on a Thursday and Friday, Bob always has a cheerful chat with each of you when you are around. On his return I always ask what the feedback is. He then goes through the list of names and I listen to what has been happening. We have a very varied group of customers who are different in age, occupation, with young children or grandchildren. We get to know a little more about you all each visit and we feel that we have quite a growing community of like minded spirits.

We love to hear your thoughts on Hexhamshire Organics. We feel quite smug often. Bob and I work really hard to produce vegetables which look and taste good. The comments Bob receives on his delivery journey are all positive and actually confirm that our Gardener’s Box looks good and that the produce tastes amazing. This is just what we want to hear. This is what we work towards. We are not a huge commercial grower providing vegetables for the big shops. But we do want to prove that a small farm can produce a huge variety of staple and interesting fruit and vegetables and herbs which look good enough to eat  and actually are as tasty as they appear. We want to show that Organic does not mean that the produce doesn’t look tended, in fact they get more attention.  Sooo, I am thanking you all for all of your kindness and words of appreciation as it boosts our confidence and our ability to want to work even better.

On the farm this week we have started to harvest from the Apple trees. They were  in your box last week and will be in future boxes as the trees have been prolific. Not only have we an abundance of fruit, the fruit we have is larger than in past years. This year, knowing that the trees are now over twelve years old, we have bought proper tree ladders which are coming in very handy.

Stating the blinkin’ obvious…we grow veg. Not just for all of you but we do often have to share with Mother Nature’s pals. For the first time, since moving to our home, we have had a squirrel in the garden. We watch this cute rodent eating the windfall apples on the ground. That is as far as the cuteness goes. We have only seen the one but this one has been nibbling away at the wood around the polytunnels and worse still the green netting on the gates of each tunnel. Cute no more! We are going to have to replace the wood and Bob has already started to make the gates good. He/She seem to be desperate to gain access to polytunnel two where the Fennel has been planted. We have called in the professionals to help as we can share some food but unfortunately the cost of replacing all the damage caused is getting a little out of hand.

On Sunday we have another course, one again fully subscribed. Another enjoyable day, meeting some customers and also likeminded gardeners. Lunch on Sunday will be a wholesome (and tasty I hope) casserole using lots of our vegetables and making use of the apples, one of Bobs favourites, apple pie. How Autumnal.
